The Manchester Short Splint
The Duran and Kleinert protocols no longer show any particular evolution in the management of lesions of the flexor tendons in zone II. Early active mobilization (MAP) is still rarely used in hand therapy centers while current surgical techniques offer sutures with suitable mechanical resistance.
The Manchester Short Splint marks a turning point in the protection of tendon sutures by allowing gentle active mobility of fingers and wrist 5 days following surgery. This type of splint requires interdisciplinary confidence and a solid tendon suture. Current studies show favorable results for the use of this type of protocol when conditions allow. Specialized teams will have to be attentive to the various factors making it possible to reduce as much as possible the “Work Of Flexion”, in order to ensure effective and safe rehabilitation.
